Specifying content for Adsense
Google Adsense is a fantastic way for owners of niche websites to earn money. Adsense works by reading the content of the page in which the adverts are hosted, and displaying adverts it thinks are appropriate.
However, as many of you I’m sure will have seen, this doesnt always work to the webmasters benefit. Firstly take a look at
http://www.lateauctions.com
As Adsense has no content to go on, it takes the theme of Auctions and displays adverts in relation to that. The problem is, on subsequent pages of the website that are more specifically category based, it will still show “Auction” adverts.
A little known fact about Google Adsense is you can specify two tags which indicate to Adsense which content it should review for determining it’s advert content.
Firstly, identify the section of the webpage that you believe Adsense should focus on, remember, don’t cheat and keep it relevent. In the case of www.lateauctions.com , it makes sense to display adverts that are related to the search results. So we place the following tag before our content.
<!--google_ad_section_start-->
And the following after the content that we want to focus on.
<!--google_ad_section_end-->
You will see now that the adverts reflect the contents of these two tags.
Now if we takea look at the Musical Instruments results on LateAuctions.com http://www.lateauctions.com/index.php?parent=0&nav=619 we can see lots of adverts relevent to musical instruments.
